March 9, 1862 marks the date when the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia dueled just off Sewells Point, in what is forever remembered as the Battle of Hampton Roads. Its was the first naval engagement between two ironclads, and forever changed the course of naval warfare. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum has detailed models of both ironclads, and Museum Volunteer John Stansell was in their Civil War Gallery this afternoon providing some roving interpretation about the significant naval engagement.
