Col. Kevin Winkle, a U.S. Army ophthalmologist from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska, removes the eye patch of a patient after the cataract surgery. Patients are given the eye patch after their operation, and within 24 hours, their sight is restored in the operated eye. This cataract surgery was used during Medical Readiness and Training Exercise, a U.S. Army Africa exercise that improves the relationship with host nation medical providers and provides free medical services to local citizens in Zanzibar, Tanzania, that need treatment.
