KINGS BAY, Ga., (April 1, 2019) To celebrate the 126th birthday of the chief petty officer, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay area chief petty officers stand in formation during morning colors. The rank of chief petty officer was officially established by the U.S. Navy on April 1, 1893. It originally encompassed nine ratings: chief master-at-arms, chief boatswain’s mate, chief quartermaster, chief gunner’s mate, chief machinist, chief carpenter’s mate, chief yeoman, chief apothecary and chief band master.
