    DECON Team Activation

First Receiver Operations Team training was held at Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) on March 28, 2019. New members of the command's Decontamination Team were guided on how to initially triage, treat, and decontaminate actual and/or potential victims exposed to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and/or high explosive agents. Eleven NHB staff members attended the three-day portion of the course, with another 15 receiving one-day refresher training under the tutelage of instructor Susan Osbourne. In the actual case of providing support in a real-world scenario, it's imperative that protective measures and proper decontamination of patients exposed to chemical or biological agents occurs before any patients enter a military treatment facility like NHB to avoid the risk of contaminating and exposing others inside the hospital setting. "Our training was accomplished on site in the actual location we would deploy the portable decontamination system, which culminated with the entire team certified to activate and set up the portable shower tent system to triage, treat and then decontaminate patients. Disaster(s) happen with no notice, and to be able to accomplish this within 10-15 minutes of any notification of an emergency of this type will provide that layer of protection to the hospital and staff," said Mt. Terry Lerma, NHB emergency manager (Official Navy photo by Douglas H Stutz, Naval Hospital Bremerton Public Affairs).
