Army Pfc. Ramsey Victor, a combat engineer with the Texas Army National Guard’s Company A, 172nd Brigade Engineer Battalion, welds together components of a distress beacon and other support items at the McAllen, Texas, U.S. Border Patrol station, Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018. Used in sparsely populated desert areas along the Texas border with Mexico, the distress beacons alert Border Patrol agents to those in the area who may need food, water or medical assistance. National Guard members throughout the Southwestern states have been working with Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection as part of Operation Guardian Support, assisting in support roles such as aviation, manning viewing observation cameras and vehicle screening and inspection.
