U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Eric M. Smith, commanding general, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and other distinguished visitors arrive in a UH-60 Blackhawk for the combined arms live fire exercise (CALFEX) at Colonel Ernesto Ravina Air Base Tarlac, Philippines, during Exercise Balikatan April 10, 2019. The CALFEX event showcased the orchestration of air and ground troops to seize an objective during Exercise Balikatan. The exercise was designed to integrate the Filipino military with U.S. forces in a combined arms scenario and expose them to the benefits of integrated fires. Balikatan, in its 35th iteration, is an annual U.S.-Philippine military training focused on a variety of missions, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, counterterrorism, and other combined military operations.
