John Crain, 23d Civil Engineer Squadron forrester, poses for a photo during a prescribed burn, April 4, 2019, at Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area. Prescribed burns are used to reduce the amount of brush and dead vegetation, which decreases the hazard and risk of any potential wildfire. Prescribed burning also improves habitat for fire dependent wildlife species by keeping areas more open, less shaded, and stimulating new beneficial herbaceous plant growth nearer to ground level.
