U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Thomas Barry, a gunner with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), fires a Multipurpose Assault Weapon at a target as part of a combined arms live fire exercise during a MEU exercise. Marines and Sailors from the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment participated in the training in order to increase proficiency and maintain combat readiness. Marines and Sailors with the 22nd MEU and Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group are currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
