U.S. Air Force Gen. Terrence O’Shaughnessy, Commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) visits with members of the 109th Airlift Wing from the New York Air National Guard serving in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, April 25, 2019. NORAD and USNORTHCOM is reinvigorating its role with the Services and branches of the Armed Forces to resource military capabilities in the Arctic for effective homeland defense.
The 109th Airlift Wing flies LC-130s, a specialized variant of the C-130 Hercules equipped with skis for polar operations, in support of the National Science Foundation by transporting fuel, cargo and passengers to and from various camps throughout Greenland.
