Retired Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 Joseph C. Riley was honored with the Silver Star and Flying Cross at Gowen Field, Boise, Idaho on May 4, 2019 for his gallantry and heroism in action during military operations nearly 50 years ago in Vietnam. While his aircraft received heavy enemy fire, Riley protected friendly forces on the ground by fearlessly taking multiple low passes to identify, fire upon and ultimately destroy an enemy complex though his aircraft had sustained severe damage.
