Lt. Col. Peter Makoto Gibbons, executive officer for Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, carried by his mother, and his family pose for a photo for his sister’s Shichi-Go-San celebration in Japan, 1974. Gibbons was born in Japan between an American father and a Japanese mother. His mother was a child living near Tokyo during World War II. The month of May is designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the U.S. This monthlong observance celebrates the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. and recognizes the hardships and challenges they endured.
