The U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard, the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band, and the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Caisson Platoon conduct military funeral honors with funeral escort for Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Brodsky in Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, May 17, 2019.

A military working dog handler, Brodsky died on July 21, 2012 in Landstuhl, Germany, from injuries resulting from a dismounted improvised explosive device blast in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

Stars and Stripes reported that after coming under fire while on patrol, Brodsky rushed to protect his dog, Jackson, bringing the K-9 to a nearby truck for shelter. He stepped on a mine as he returned to the fight. The blast took both of Brodsky’s legs and several days later, he died at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

Brodsky was assigned to Navy Region Southwest Security Detachment, San Diego and was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Brodsky’s parents, Steven and Debra Brodsky, received the U.S. flag from his casket.
