SHIMODA, Japan (May 19, 2019) – Sailors assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem (DDG 63) shake hands with Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Sailors assigned to the Japanese mine sweeper JS Hirado (MSO 305) after participating in a tug of war competition during the 80th Shimoda Black Ship Festival. The Navy’s participation in the festival celebrates the heritage of U.S. Japanese naval partnership first established by Commodore Matthew Perry’s 1853 port visit.
