The MK46 Mod 1 weapon system fires a round during a live-fire qualification exercise aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18). The MK46 Mod 1 weapon system is a remotely operated naval gun system using a 30mm high-velocity cannon and second-generation thermal day-night sight for close-in ship's protection. New Orleans and embarked Marines assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are deployed as part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
