NDTs are trained to conduct operations in contaminated environments. Moving through one of the reactors at Savannah River Site, the Initial Entry Team, also responsible for finding entry points, surveys the target for radiation. Additionally, an IET performs an all-hazards assessment for safety, and checks for contamination. Once the IET finishes their search and radiation is detected, they report back to the Characterization Team, who can determine the makeup of the material and characterize the facility (answering the who, what, when, why, how much, technology being used and what is happening in the plant).
