The recycling triangle with the number 1 and "PETE" can often be found on the bottom of water bottles. PETE represents one of a few abbreviations for polyethylene terephthalate, a strong, lightweight plastic that is one of two types that the Fort Knox Recycle Center collects. The other is high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, most commonly used for milk jugs, detergent and juice bottles, butter tubs and toiletries.
