Airman 1st Class Andrew Edwards, 23d Civil Engineer Squadron (CES) electrical power product journeyman, reports the size of a simulated crater during airfield recovery training, May 23, 2019, at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. The training consisted of Airmen responding to a simulated bombed airfield to perform the proper steps and procedures to ensure rapid airfield damage repair. The primary task of engineers in the Air Force is to establish, operate and sustain air bases. A critical component of their mission responsibilities is to be able to rapidly recover after an attack, making it possible to launch and recover combat airpower. “If an airfield is damaged by enemy forces, it is CE’s job to get that airfield operational as quickly as possible,” said Lt. Col. Michael Francis, 23d CES commander. “This starts with airfield damage assessment teams surveying an entire airfield to identify damages and whether any remaining unexploded ordnance are out there and calling that in to one of our representatives in the emergency operations center.” (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Erick Requadt)
