GULF OF ADEN (June 7, 2019) U.S. Marines with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit walk to a CH-53E Super Stallion on the flight deck of the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) prior to departing for a simulated ship to ship raid. The Marines, with Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, flew to the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Arlington (LPD 24) to refine their skills and train in an unfamiliar environment in order to maintain proficiency while at sea. The 22nd MEU and Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group are currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the Western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
