The Netherlands team members guide their human-powered submarine Wasub IX into the deep-water basin at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division for their first time trial run of the day in West Bethesda, Md., on June 25, 2019. Carderock is hosting the 15th International Human-Powered Submarine Races in its 3,200-foot David Taylor Model Basin. This biennial science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) event, sponsored by the Foundation for Underwater Research and Education, provides an avenue for high school and college teams to tackle the difficult challenges of submarine design, construction and operation.
