Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Dr. Donald C. Winter presents Eroni "Aaron" Kumana with the flag from USS Peleliu (LHA 5) for his courageous efforts more than 60 years ago, on the Solomon Islands, Aug. 22. During World War II, Kumana rescued Lt. John F. Kennedy, nearly 18 years before becoming president, and his PT-109's crew following the ship's collision with a Japanese destroyer near Pudding Island on Aug. 2, 1943.
