The Washington Monument is illuminated by a projection of a Saturn V rocket July 18, 2019, during a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, in which man first walked on the moon. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was involved in both of these major national accomplishments, having completed the Washington Monument in 1884 and contributing to the space program through the establishment of a Canaveral District in the 1960s. One of the Corps most challenging assignments was the construction of the vehicle assembly building at the John F. Kennedy Space Center which was designed to house the assembly and final checkout of the 363-foot-tall Saturn V. Also shown, is the Lincoln Memorial. Army engineer officers served on both the Commission of Fine Arts, which influenced the memorial's site and design, and on the Lincoln Memorial Commission, which managed its construction.
