    J. Palace, one of "Edson's" Raiders, fires a World War I M1903 Springfield, during an event at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., April 13, 2011. The Raiders, the first special operations forces in World War II, were an elite unit of Marines who conducted amphibious operations in notable battles such as Midway Island and Makin Island. The unit was disbanded after World War II and there are now a little more than a dozen Raiders still living today.
