Littoral combat ship USS Independence (LCS 2) passes under the Bridge of the Americas and enters the Pacific Ocean for the first time. The bridge, located in Balboa, Panama, connects the North and South American landmasses and marks the end of the Panama Canal. Independence's Gold Crew and embarked Mine Countermeasure Squadron, Detachment 1, are underway for the ship's maiden voyage to its homeport of San Diego.
