Lt. Col. Gregory Bond, Director of Marine and Family Programs,(left) awards the Gold President's Volunteer Award to Staff Sgt. Hector Alanis, operations chief, Headquarters and Service Battalion, at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the recreation center April 16 aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. More than 403 active duty military members, spouses and retirees of MCRD and Western Recruiting Region were recognized for volunteering 40 hours or more. 26 volunteers received the President's Volunteer Award which is awarded to volunteers who dedicated more than 100 hours or more of their time to help others. The award is categorized by gold, silver and bronze. "We're here to recognize those who take time out of their day to help others," said guest speaker Col. Robert Gates, chief of staff, MCRD and WRR. The baseball-themed event titled "Our Volunteers are All-stars!" included a meal for the volunteers and their families provided hot dogs, nachos and root beer floats.
