SURABAYA, Indonesia (Aug. 5, 2019) Chief Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician James Varner and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician 1st Class Nicholas Welegala, both assigned to U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 5, teach members of the Indonesian Navy’s Komando Pasukan Katak (KOPASKA) 2nd Fleet Surabaya Unit how to use an AN/PQS-2A handheld sonar device to find the location of a training mine shape during a counter charge live-fire demonstration in support of a mine countermeasures knowledge exchange as part of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Indonesia 2019. This year marks the 25th iteration of CARAT, a multinational exercise series designed to enhance U.S. and partner navies' abilities to operate together in response to traditional and non-traditional maritime security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
