U.S. Army Specialist Nathan Creel, an animal care specialist assigned to the Charleston Veterinary Treatment Facility, performs on his southern drum at Joint Base Charleston, S.C., July 3, 2019. Creel is a Charleston native from the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe in the local area who has been a drummer for his tribe since 2010. Creel is one of over 19,000 Native Americans who serve under the Department of Defense. According to the 2011 National Military Strategy, the challenges the military faces requires a Joint Force that is flexible, agile and adaptive.
