    173rd Airborne Brigade

U.S. Army medics assigned to 1st Squadron (Airborne), 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne brigade conduct fresh whole blood transfusions on simulated hypovolemic shock patients during Exercise Saber Junction in Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, Sept. 8, 2019.

Hypovolemic shock is most often the result of blood loss after a major vessel bursts or from a serious injury. The brigade’s airborne medics are incorporating the practical application of fresh whole blood transfusions during Saber Junction to maintain proficiency and maximize their effectiveness on the battlefield.

Saber Junction 2019 is an exercise involving nearly 5,400 participants from 16 ally and partner nations at the U.S. Army's Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels Training Areas, Sept. 3 to Sept. 30, 2019. SJ19 is designed to assess the readiness of the U.S. Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade to execute land operations in a joint, combined environment and to promote interoperability with partnering allies and partner nations.
