Natalie Gut will enter her first year of college with tangible work experience in a research lab thanks to her Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education experience as an intern for Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton.
With her major currently undecided, her time at the command offered a valuable opportunity to serve as a “jane-of-all trades”, see several aspects of the labs, and gain insight into potential career paths.
“Every day is different for me,” says Gut. “I have really enjoyed shadowing people in labs and getting to the process of the types of experiments that are performed here.”
The primary focus of her role has been to help keep labs organized by preparing documents, labeling test tubes to support the efficiency, accuracy and safety of our scientists’ work.
“Natalie was crucial to helping us achieve a finer level of detail and organization in our programs over the summer,” says her sponsor, Matthew Roberts, Hazardous Materials Specialist. “With her help, I was able to organize our safety manual to a level I couldn’t achieve without her support.”
Gut also gained wisdom from her time at the command.
“I have learned that safety in and out of the labs is very important,” says Gut. “Matt has shown me the value of taking the time and do things right to get the most out of every experience.”
