Cpl. Matthew D. Thompsen practices drill movements during formal noncommissioned officer leadership training aboard USS Makin Island here May 9. The 20-year-old Aurora, Colo., native serves as a special intelligence system administrator with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s command element. The unit embarked the amphibious assault ship, as well as USS New Orleans and USS Pearl Harbor in San Diego Nov. 14, beginning a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific, Horn of Africa and Middle East regions.
