Private 1st Class (retired) Vincent Speranza, a veteran of the famed 101st Airborne Division’s defense of Bastogne, Belgium, during World War II’s Battle of the Bulge spoke about leadership under adversity and life as a Soldier in combat at the Illinois Army National Guard’s Commanders Guidance Conference in East Peoria, Illinois, on Sept. 24. The 93-year-old retired teacher colorfully described his life in the Army during World War II from training to the end of the war including how he unintentionally became the inspiration for a Belgium beer.
