Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Maj. Gen. Shinichi Aoki, left, U.S. Marine Maj. Gen. Paul J. Rock Jr., center, and Philippine Marine Brig. Gen. Ariel Caculitan observe an amphibious exercise during KAMANDAG 3 at Katungkulan Beach, Marine Barracks Gregorio Lim, Philippines, Oct. 12, 2019. KAMANDAG helps participating forces maintain a high level of readiness and responsiveness, and enhances combined military-to-military relations, interoperability, and multinational coordination. Aoki is the commander of the JGSDF Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, Rock Jr. is the commander of 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and deputy commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force, and Caculitan is the deputy commandant of the the Philippine Marine Corps. KAMANDAG is an acronym for the Filipino phrase "Kaagapay Ng Mga Manirigma Ng Dagat," which translates to "Cooperation of the Warriors of the Sea," highlighting the partnership between the U.S. and Philippine militaries.
