U.S. Marines Staff Sgt. Taylor C. Coughlin, left, and Gunnery Sgt. Adam T. Gajewski prepare to conduct a fire support coordination exercise as part of KAMANDAG 3 at Subic Bay, Philippines, Oct. 13, 2019. As treaty allies, U.S.-Philippine and U.S.-Japanese military collaboration has served as a cornerstone for stability in the Indo-Pacific region for decades, and the U.S. has a continuing commitment in strengthening our longstanding alliances, reinforcing our maritime security efforts and addressing our shared extremist threat. Coughlin, an Oak Harbor, Wa., native, is a UH-1Y Huey helicopter crew chief assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 169, 1st Marine Air Wing. Gajewski, a Cleveland, Oh., native, is a UH-1Y Huey helicopter crew chief assigned to HMLA-169, 1st MAW. KAMANDAG is an acronym for the Filipino phrase “Kaagapay Ng Mga Manirigma Ng Dagat,” which translates to “Cooperation of the Warriors of the Sea,” highlighting the partnerships between the U.S. and Philippine militaries.
