Airman 1st Class Luis Perez-Lugo, 23d Maintenance Squadron (MXS) nondestructive inspection journeyman, sharpens a carbon rod during a joint oil analysis inspection Oct. 21, 2019, at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. Joint oil analysis inspections are performed after each aircraft flight to detect abnormal wear of an aircraft engine and prevent catastrophic failure. The 23d MXS Airmen use an oil analysis spectrometer fitted with a carbon rod and disc to determine the concentration of elements, such as zinc and iron, present within the engine parts.
