Mississippi's newest namesake, Virginia-class fast attack submarine Pre-Commissioning Unit Mississippi (SSN 782), moors at Port of Pascagoula, Miss., in preparation for her commissioning ceremony, June 2. Billed as the Navy's "next generation" of attack submarine, measuring 377 feet long, with a beam of 34 feet, weighing 7,800 tons when submerged and with a crew of 134, Mississippi is one of the Navy's newest and most technologically sophisticated submarines. PCU Mississippi is the fifth U.S. Navy vessel to carry the name of the Magnolia State.
