The family of the late Sgt. Maj. Thomas J. McHugh, former sergeant major of the Marine Corps, bow their heads for the invocation given by Lt. j.g. Rainell Cannon, chaplain, Headquarters and Support Battalion, at a wreath-laying ceremony for McHugh at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville, North Carolina, Nov. 10, 2019. Since Nov. 10, 1954, wreath-laying ceremonies honoring former commandants and sergeants major have been conducted at gravesites or other places as a continuing part of the Marine Corps birthday tradition.
