U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Phillip Stewart, commanding general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Alliance Ground Surveillance Force, the guest of honor, receives his slice of cake during a celebration of the 244th Marine Corps birthday in Sigonella, Italy, Nov. 8, 2019. Traditionally, the guest of honor eats their slice of cake first followed by the oldest Marine and then the youngest Marine. The passing of the cake from oldest to youngest symbolizes the passing of experience and knowledge from one Marine to another. SPMAGTF-CR-AF is deployed to conduct crisis-response and theater-security operations in Africa and promote regional stability by conducting military-to-military training exercises throughout Europe and Africa.
