Fort Ransom, N.D., Mayor James Thernes thanks Lt. Col. David Skalicky, North Dakota National Guard Innovative Readiness Training manager, for the work being done by North Dakota National Guard Soldiers as they construct a new walking bridge across the Sheyenne River in Fort Ransom. Members of the North Dakota National Guard's 815th Engineer Company (Horizontal) are constructing a walking bridge over the river as part of an Innovative Readiness Training project. The Soldiers are the second group to devote two weeks to the site. The project involved removing the old bridge that had been destroyed by an ice jam in the flooded river, and reconstructing a new bridge in its place that's higher and handicap accessible. The bridge serves as a focal point for the small community in southeastern North Dakota and provides access to the main part of town by foot traffic. IRT projects require a lengthy approval process but offer a unique opportunity for guardsmen to gain hands-on training while helping communities complete projects that otherwise would not be able to be done.
