AL ASAD, Iraq: Lance Cpl. Tim Patterson, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, augmenting 8th ESB and supporting Combat Logistics Battalion 2, 2d Force Service Support Group (Forward), smoothes concrete poured into a crater in Western Iraq recently as part of an Engineer Crater Repair mission. The West Linn, Ore., native and student at Oregon State University, along with his fellow engineers, used more than 1,800 cubic feet of concrete to fill two large craters on one major roadway during this mission. Filling the craters helps speed convoys, lessening the amount of time they have to spend in harm way, and eliminates potential hiding places for insurgents to place mines and Improvised Explosive Devices.
