Hosted by the city of Monte Cassino every year, local government officials, town residents, Italian army members, World War II veterans and their families, along with soldiers from the 36th Inf. Div. gather to pay homage to the fallen soldiers and civilians of World War II. The 36th Infantry Division crossed the Rapido River here in 1944, liberating the city from the German army despite heavy losses of division soldiers.
