Airman 1st Class Joseph Rhoades, 5th Civil Engineering Squadron electrical systems specialist apprentice, uses special spiked shoes called Gaffs to scale an electrical pole in the Pole Yard at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., June 6. Powerful lower legs and arms are required to climb to the top of the pole and hold positions long enough to perform repairs.
