In a country that is popularly known as "the land of the rising sun", many Japanese hold the belief that the first sunrise of the year, or "hatsuhinode", has a supernatural quality. Making a prayer at the sight of the sun peering over the horizon for the first time in the New Year is said to bring good luck, especially when done at places where the view of the rising sun is magnificent.
