A rigid hull inflatable boat approaches the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) during a recovery at anchorage off the coast of San Diego. San Diego's first well deck operations since its commissioning in May were in support of a developmental project to launch and recover 11-meter rigid hull inflatable boat from the stern gates of U.S. Navy Amphibs. The project is coordinated by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Program Management Office (PMS-408) and Office of Naval Research. This is the test of the prototype stern gate launch and recovery system, conducted by civilian engineers and scientists from SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific and associated contractor companies.
