Fleet Readiness Center East’s manufacturing department stepped in and produced this 522 fitting for the H-53 heavy-lift helicopter when supply system shortfalls led to a work stoppage on two aircraft. The complex fitting, milled on a five-axis milling machine, took approximately 100 hours of machining time to complete. This critical safety item carries the load for the helicopter’s tail and tail pylon – about 30 percent of its volume – during flight operations.
