Nebraska National Guard’s Camp Ashland Training Site prepares to welcome travelers from Wuhan, China, Feb. 6, 2020, as part of a state department initiative to evacuate federal and contract workers from the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. With approval by the Department of Defense, the Nebraska National Guard provided unoccupied lodging quarters with 85 rooms, and three other vacant buildings to support a federal Health and Human Services request. DoD installations are only providing housing support, and HHS is responsible for all care, transportation and security of the travelers. Disaster Medical Assistance Team members brought in by the federal Department of Health and Human Services helped to stock rooms with linens, water, toiletries, snacks and more. Working with members of the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine, they also prepared two vacant buildings for administrative purposes, including a meal preparation facility, pharmacy and a small medical unit. The U.S. Marshals Service also assisted with the housing support, including preparing for the safety and security of the impending guests, and aiding with a rehearsal run of their arrival by bus.
