Drill instructors encourage their recruits to keep fighting after being knocked down June 5 during pugil sticks aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Recruits bout until the Martial Arts Instructor blows the whistle, indicating a fatal blow. Prior to entering the pugil sticks pit, the MAI's give classes to the recruits informing them what is considered a fatal blow.
