A Wirewalker, driven by waves and currents, sits at the ocean’s surface during a field campaign led by oceanographers from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. The Wirewalker was equipped with a variety of instruments to measure light, conductivity, temperature, depth, light and acoustic backscatter, and dissolved oxygen throughout the water column. The NRL study was focused on characterizing biological ocean swarms. (U.S Navy photo, Brad Penta)
