Fire Chief Joshua Ellinger, Town of Huntington Emergency Management, and Department of Fire Services - Massachusetts Fire Academy hosted Surface Ice Rescue: Technician Level at Littleville Lake on 15 FEB 2020. There were approximately 30 students and 15 additional members helping with the class. The class discussed different ice conditions, hypothermia, and rescue practices. Students practiced tying knots, setting up a floating hose line, throwinga rescue rope, and carrying out surface ice rescue. MFA Instructors cut two holes in the ice for extracting "victims" that "fell" into the water. The ice was replaced in the holes that were cut and pallets were put over the holes at the conclusion of the training.
Instructors and students met at Stanton Hall, Huntington, MA for classroom and power point presentations. Around 1230, the class came to the Littleville Lake boat ramp to practice techniques taught in the classroom. The course provided students the knowledge, skills, and abilities to identify equipment and techniques used in ice rescue including: performing a size up, conducting witness interviews, performing self-rescue techniques, and effecting a shore based ice rescue using the GO method as defined in NFPA 1006 and 1670.
