144th Airlift Squadron loadmaster MSgt. Doug Mathes, Alaska Air National Guard, 176th Wing, looks for a smoke signal out the window of a C-17 Globemaster III during a rescue resupply mission off the coast of northern Alaska, in support of exercise Arctic Eagle 2020, Feb. 26. Identifying the smoke signal enables the loadmaster to precisely guide the airdrop to the identified landing zone. The Alaska National Guard is hosting exercise Arctic Eagle 20, a joint-training exercise, Feb. 20 to Mar. 6, throughout Alaska, including JBER, Eielson Air Force Base, Fort Wainwright, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and as far north as Harrison Bay. As a homeland security and emergency response exercise, Arctic Eagle 20 is designed to increase the National Guard’s ability and effectiveness to operate in the extreme cold-weather conditions found in arctic environments.
