200331-N-GP839-0009 SAN DIEGO (Mar. 31, 2020) Capt. Jefferey Bledsoe, Director for Nursing Services at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) and Capt. Bradford L. Smith, Naval Medical Center San Diego's commanding officer, presents Registered Nurse (RN) Janet Foote with the DAISY award during presentation ceremony held at the Labor & Delivery unit at, Mar. 31.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was formed in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of complications from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, an auto-immune disease. The nursing care that Barnes received had a significant impact on his family and inspired them to create the DAISY Foundation. Over 2,800 health care facilities in all 50 states and 17 countries participate in the program and honor nurses with the DAISY Award. The DAISY Award celebrates nurses who provide extraordinary compassionate and skillful care every day. During the ceremony, DAISY Award recipients receive a certificate, and DAISY gifts of appreciation to include an “Ask Me About the DAISY Award” pin, a sculpture which depicts the embracing relationship nurses have with their patients.

NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Vernishia R. Vaughn-Lucas)
