    USS Carl Vinson

200406-N-YI115-1111 BREMERTON, Wash. (April 6, 2020) Quartermaster Seaman Samuel Koeller, a native of Somerset, Wis., takes readings from an alidade aboard Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as the ship moves out of Dry Dock 6 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility. Alidades measure, in degrees, the ship’s direction in relation to fixed locations on the surrounding land, and watch standers use a mathematical formula to locate the ship’s geological position to ensure safe transit. Vinson has completed the dry docked portion of its scheduled maintenance and will complete the rest of the availability floating pierside in Bremerton, Wash.
